The Low Down on Eggs – Part II

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Did you know, your normal supermarket eggs coming from mass factory farm doesn’t compare nutritionally with organic free range eggs from healthy chickens that are allowed to roam freely and eat a more natural diet.  Your typical cheap grocery store eggs will have lower nutrient levels and a higher omega-6 level and lower omega-3 level.  On the other hand, the cage-free organic eggs from healthier chickens allowed to eat more natural feed and roam freely will have much higher vitamin and mineral levels and a more balanced healthier omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio.

I recently compared eggs I bought at the grocery store with a box of free range eggs.

Most people don’t realize that there’s a major difference because they’ve never bought real eggs from healthy chickens… The eggs from the grocery store had pale yellow yolks and thin weak shells. On the other hand, the free range eggs had strong thick shells and deep orange colored yolks indicating much higher nutrition levels and carotenoids… and just a healthier egg in general.

This is due to the fact that a free-roaming hen allowed to roam on plenty of land will eat a variety of greens, insects, worms, etc transferring MUCH higher levels of nutrients to the eggs compared to an unhealthy hen that is trapped inside a cage and fed nothing but piles of corn and soy.  It’s a DRASTIC difference in the nutrition that you get from the egg.

So next time a health or fitness professional tells you that egg whites are better for you (because of their “fat-phobic” mentality towards dietary fats), you can quietly ignore their advice knowing that you now understand the REAL deal about egg yolks.

So, can we all please STOP with this sillyness about eating an omelete with 4-5 egg whites and only 1 egg yolk… If you want real taste and real health benefits, we’d all be better off eating ALL of our eggs with the yolks.

Do you REALLY think that our ancestors threw out the yolks and only ate the egg whites?  NOT A CHANCE!  They intuitively knew that all of the nutrition was found in the yolks.  Our modern society has been brainwashed with misinformation about fats and cholesterol.

Like I have been saying to you all, eat like a caveman!!!!

This is exactly how I eat… I personally eat 4 whole eggs every day with breakfast, and I maintain reasonably low bodyfat most of the year.

Enjoy your eggs!!!

Move Forward or Regress

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

I started doing spin at Club Lime Tuggeranong gym last year. If you’ve ever done stationary cycling you know how gruelling it can be. It’s a deep pain and extremely exhausting (for anyway).

That little bike can dish out quite a punch. It is a great workout.

It’s been over a year now. I’ve been cycling once per week to get into better shape. It’s worked!

When I first started cycling I used to hate climbing. Climbing is when you crank up your gear shift (resistance) on the bike. You crank it so you literally have to jump out of your seat to hammer down those pedals and keep moving.

It takes every ounce of energy and effort to keep moving forward. It tests your will and your mind. Walking down a set of steps after this work out is not an option. Welcome to the climb.

I almost fell off the bike once when climbing. It was my fourth week cycling and we were running a climbing circuit. The circuit went like this: Stand up and climb for 5 seconds, down for 10 seconds, up for 5 and down for 10, and so on and so forth. As I was going up and down on one of those cycles I was spinning too fast and lost my footing – and almost lost the bike too!

Yesterday I was climbing again. When the music started and we were about to climb, I got excited!

All I could see was this massive mountain in front of me (visualisation is a wonderful thing).

As I was climbing I was thinking about every challenge that has ever come my way. I was thinking about every obstacle that has ever been in my path. I was thinking about every time I’ve ever gotten knocked down and how I got back up.

The mountain is a metaphor for all these things. Now, when I start a climb I think to myself,

“You’re mine! I’m gonna eat you up!” mountain

And you know what, that’s what happens when I leave the gym. Every time I face a new challenge, an obstacle or get knocked down, I think of the climb. I realize that there are only two options – go back where I came from or love the climb.

To the top!

Don’t Leave it too Late…

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

What are the common mistakes people make about setting those goals in spring – weather’s getting warmer and they panic and want to lose weight too fast etc?

• People try to go onto any ‘fad diet’ they can get their hands on, nothing beats clean healthy unprocessed foods. We have so much variety of fresh fruit and veggies at this time of year
• People start out to hard too fast with the training and end up getting injured. Pace yourself and build into the program.
• Most leave it too late… make the start NOW to make it all easier to achieve your fitness goals

What are ideal kinds of physical activities/exercise for spring here in Canberra?

• Anything outdoors. It is a beautiful time of year for outdoor training of any description (Boot Camp, running groups, bike riding, tennis etc)
• An movement will get the natural endorphins running and the desire to do more will increase naturally.
• Look for things that you as an individual enjoy ( too many to list here)
• Ideally you have a mix of some sort of strength training for healthy muscle tone, bone density and to aid in burning up unwanted bodyfat, along with a variety of cardiovascular training to help ward off any unwanted diseases, increase heart and lung health and of course burn up the fat.

How important is it to find an activity you actually enjoy?

• It is vital to find something you enjoy. If not you will get bored or frustrated very quickly and end up giving up ( as it is only about 7 – 9% of the population will make a start to a Spring Fitness Regime. Then only about 3 – 5% will stick to it), so it is vital to find activities that you enjoy to prolonge your fitness endevours.

What are the pros and cons of exercising with a friend?
Pros
• Accountability to that friend
•  more fun exercising with a friend
• Push each other harder
• Brings out the competitive spirit
Cons
• Reliability (having to meet them and they don’t turn up)
• May not train as hard as you do
• Might be more of a distraction/hinderance than help to your training
• Different levels of fitness (you might have to wait for them or vise versa)
8. How can people stay motivated to be physically active?
• Pretty much all the points above
• But people really need to find something they enjoy. Over time it will become a habit for them and they will just make it part of their busy life and schedule.
• Set your training around a time that is suitable. Don’t set the alarm for 5am if you are not a morning person, because you will be just kidding yourself and fall off the wagon quicker than you got on!!
• Join a group of likeminded people in your area. You will be more likely to stay physically active if you are with a group of people that are also working on the same goals.
